Success in Fight Against AIDS Achieved Thanks to Royal Government, Civil Society, and Development Partners Working Closely, Adopting “People-Focused Approaches”

(Siem Reap): Speaking at the opening of a meeting held by the Executive Directors of the International Alliance against AIDS at Angkor Century Hotel on the morning of 18 March 2019, His Excellency Senior Minister Ieng Mouly, Chair of the National AIDS Authority, underscored that the success in the response to HIV over more than last two decades, leading Cambodia towards reaching the 90-90-90 targets in 2017, was achieved thanks to the strong support provided by Prime Minister of Cambodia Samdech Decho Hun Sen. Kingdom not yet ready for LGBT laws: Hun Sen

Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday said the Kingdom is not ready yet to create legislation to allow same-sex marriages because the issue is still causing controversy in some countries. Mr Hun Sen, however, appealed again to parents, guardians and the public not to discriminate against or hate LGBT people. He also called on LGBT people to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, especially HIV, as he has received a report that the HIV transmission rates among homosexuals has increased. “Infectious diseases among gay men have begun to spread, they should be careful and not transmit diseases to others,” Mr Hun Sen said. H.E Senior Minister Ieng Mouly, Chair of the National AIDS Authority, has reminded that “Valentine’s Day” on February 14 should not be misconstrued as day of love for sweethearts, leading to committing indecent acts, contrary to national tradition, and causing health problems. H.E. Senior Minister advised that the youth should love their families, love the nation, and especially, love themselves by making absolutely certain that they are in good health as well as bamboo shoot succeeding bamboo and as the nation’s successors.
