His Excellency Senior Minister Ieng Mouly Presides Over Commemoration of International Women’s Day, 8 March

Senior Minister Ieng Mouly, Chair of the National AIDS Authority, presided over the commemoration of the 105th International Women’s Day, 8 March, at Sereipheap Hotel in Siem Reap province town in the afternoon of March 2, 2016. Attending the event were Their Excellencies, Louk Chumteav, ladies, and gentlemen Vice Chairs, advisers, Secretary General, Deputy Secretary General, departmental heads, and all the National AIDS Authority officials. The Senior Minister recalled the history and cause of the International Women’s Day as well as women’s participation in Cambodian society to build vital and indispensable socioeconomic development in all fields. He said Cambodian women played vital roles as mother, wife, family head, and teacher close to their children in providing them with education. The overwhelming majority of women have almost completely exclusively helped their families with supply and cooking of food, family economy management, and so forth. Even though opportunities for women to participate in society and building capabilities are still limited, since Cambodia has recognized their full freedom, their development has gained vigorous impetus. Primary schools, junior secondary schools, high schools, faculties, and universities have been erected by the Royal Government to meet the need of offering education to Cambodian women and building up their capabilities, thereby allowing them to gain capabilities and better leadership opportunities in society; that is to better bridge the gender gap. The Senior Minister also spoke of women’s participation in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Cambodia. As being exposed easily to HIV infection, women were an effective key to the prevention of HIV spread as well. Should they have decision-making power and sufficient education, women would be able to prevent HIV spread from men. Finally, the Senior Minister expressed commendation to the sisters and nieces for their participation in all social sectors and called for non-discrimination against women. He asked all the subordinate leaders and officials to take part further in the promotion of women’s rights and supporting them to grasp the opportunities and capabilities to perform duties as men. The Senior Minister then presented a bouquet of flowers, as symbol to commemorate the 8 March International Women’s Day, to Lok Chumteav Sim Kheng Kham, Vice Chair of the National AIDS Authority and representative of the Authority’s women leaders and officials.
