
H.E. Senior Minister Ieng Mouly, Senior Advisor to the Association of Cambodian Historians, jointly presided over the opening ceremony of the Academic Conference on the 500th Anniversary of Friendship: The Church and the Kingdom of Cambodia, on the morning of September 14, 2023, at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. The Conference had the participation of representatives from the French Missionary Association, the Association of Cambodian Historians, the Department of History of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, and leaders from InterED Institute.
In his opening remarks, the Senior Minister touched upon multiple topics:
1. The mission of the French Catholic Clergy in Cambodia during the 16th and 20th centuries
2. The marvelous civilization of Cambodia, which the French admired, especially the amazement of Mr. Mouhot when he immediately saw the temple of Angkor Wat
3. The mission of the French Administrator in Cambodia, contained in the writings of Doudart de Lagrée in 1883
4. The establishment of educational, religious, and cultural institutions in the French era, such as the Pali School in 1914, and the Buddhist Institute in 1930.
H.E. Ieng also thanked H.E., Dr. Sorn Samnang, Chair of the Association of Khmer Historians, the Catholic Community, InterED Institute, and the Department of History of the Royal University of Phnom Penh for hosting the conference, as it is important in sharing wisdom and knowledge about the history of Cambodia.
