
Senior Minister Ieng Mouly, Chair of the National AIDS Authority (NAA), received a visit by Ms. Patricia Ongpin, Country Director for UNAIDS Cambodia, Lao PDR and Malaysia on Monday, September 11, 2023, at the NAA office. The Vice-Chairs, the Secretary General, the Director of Cabinet, and the UNAIDS's officials were also present at the meeting.
Several important topics were discussed:
- Cambodia’s participation in UNAIDS’s Programme Coordinating Board (UNAIDS PCB) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland
- ASEAN’s Statement on HIV/AIDS
- The policy of Ending HIV/AIDS and the Sustainability Program
- The National AIDS Spending Assessment (NASA) and the National Comprehensive and Multi-Sector Strategic Plan VI for HIV/AIDS Response
- The mechanisms to coordinate multi-sector response to HIV/AIDS
Ms. Patricia Ongpin began by congratulating Senior Minister Ieng Mouly on receiving the trust from Cambodia’s leadership to continue to lead the National AIDS Authority in the new Royal Government of the 7th Legislature of the National Assembly, with Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet as the Prime Minister. Ms. Patricia Ongpin also wished the Senior Minister more success in the fight against HIV/AIDS in this new term.
Furthermore, Ms. Patricia Ongpin informed H.E. Senior Minister that the UNAIDS PCB meeting will be held in Geneva, Switzerland from December 12-14, 2023. This is the second session, which will focus on the topic of testing for HIV/AIDS.
The Country Director for UNAIDS Cambodia, Lao PDR and Malaysia also thanked the Cambodian delegation for the active participation in the first session, which previously took place on June 26-28, 2023. She also expressed appreciation for smoothing the pathway to strengthen the work of UNAIDS, as well as for sharing the successful experiences of Cambodia in the fight against HIV/AIDS. On this point, the Chair of the NAA informed that he will personally lead the Cambodian delegation to the second meeting in Geneva.
Regarding the NASA and the preparation of the National Comprehensive and Multi-Sector Strategic Plan VI on HIV/AIDS Response, H.E. Ieng Mouly confirmed that the NAA will consult with UNAIDS to prepare these two documents.
However, the NAA will first have to prepare a draft of the National Policy to End HIV/AIDS in 2025 and the Sustainability of the HIV/AIDS Program 2023-2028 for approval by the new cabinet of the Royal Government. The National Policy to End HIV/AIDS in 2025 and the Sustainability of the HIV/AIDS program 2023-2028 will be the cornerstone and the compass for the NASA and the National Comprehensive and Multi-Sector Strategic Plan VI for HIV/AIDS Response.
Once again, Ms. Patricia Ongpin confirmed that UNAIDS will provide technical support and work closely with the National AIDS Authority to help in Cambodia’s fight against HIV/AIDS find timely success. The meeting concluded in a very friendly and fruitful manner.
