In a virtual launch organized by UNAIDS Asia and the Pacific Office in Bangkok on Friday, June 4, H.E. Ieng Mouly, Senior Minister and Chair of the National AIDS Authority shared vital features of high performing countries and revealed Cambodian efforts in scaling up combination prevention programs to meet the needs of key populations including young key populations.
This event was made in the lead up to the UN High-Level Meeting on HIV and AIDS where UNAIDS publishes a new report entitled Global Commitment. Local Action: Building on two decades of global solidarity to end AIDS.
Senior Minister Ieng Mouly stressed out that strong political leadership is key to the success for the battle against HIV and AIDS. He pointed out that Samdech Techo Hun Sen Prime Minister calls for a national movement to engage a national and subnational response to end the AIDS epidemic. This strong political will needs to be translated into reality with the application of the “Dynamic of Stakeholders Participation” of the rectangular strategy that assists different sectors to collaborate and share responsibility in the last battle against AIDS.
To address the increase of new HIV infections among young people especially MSM and TG (expanding from 12% of all new infections in 2010 to 54% in 2020), Cambodia is committed to avert new infections to less than 250 by 2025 through tailored and customized prevention interventions and intensify targeted case detection to achieve the 1st 95 using innovative interventions such as micro-targeting PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), HIV Self-Testing, Recency Test, Social Media for behavior change and demand creation.
