Senior Minister Ieng Mouly Opens Consultative Workshop on Drug/AIDS Control in Stung Treng Province

Stung Treng: Senior Minister Ieng Mouly, Chair of the National AIDS Authority, presided over, in Stung Treng Province on March 4, 2020, the opening of the consultative workshop to review the works carried out in 2019 and set targets for implementation in 2020.

 

On that occasion, representatives of the General Secretariat of the National Authority for Combating Drugs and of the National AIDS Authority discussed the prevention of drugs and AIDS problems in the presence of Chhim Khin Dareth, secretary general of the National AIDS Authority and Major General Lim Tong Huot, director of the Legal, Education and Rehabilitation Department of the General Secretariat of the National Authority for Combating Drugs, with the participation of 115 concerned stakeholders.

Major General Lim Tong Huot said that on December 1, 2019, on behalf of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia, Senior General Ke Kim Yan, Deputy Prime Minister and President of the National Authority for Combating Drugs, advised the National AIDS Authority, ministries, and institutions involved to strengthen cooperation with the Cambodian Red Cross on the HIV/AIDS response work. Moreover, collaboration with the National AIDS Authority should be strengthened and, especially, enhanced to make certain that the control of HIV/AIDS spread among drug users and intravenous drug users become more effective.

Chhim Khin Dareth asserted that from now on, the two Secretariats General, meaning the Secretariat General of the National AIDS Authority and the Secretariat General of the National Authority for Combating Drugs, would continue teamwork to make sure that drug addicts and HIV carriers would gain access to treatment and that the spread of HIV and drugs in local communities be prevented.

According to a 2019 report, Cambodia had 72,000 HIV carriers; among them, some more than 80% had access to treatment, and kept control of over 20,000 drug users and addicts.
