Senior Minister His Excellency Ieng Mouly, Chair of the National AIDS Authority, held a working meeting with Dr. Takeshi Kasai, Regional Director of World Health Organization for the Asia-Pacific at the authority’s headquarters on the afternoon of August 26, 2019.
He briefed the delegation of the background, roles, and operations of the National AIDS Authority, a multisectoral entity with national and subnational networks for carrying out the work to respond to HIV/AIDS. He also mentioned that the authority had presented to plenary meetings proposals on policy of coordinating the response to HIV/AIDS at national and subnational levels.
In fact, in February 2019, the Prime Minister approved Notification No. 213 consisting of a six-point policy decision, covering some strategic points to ensure the sustainability of the response to HIV/AIDS, aiming at achieving the 95-95-95 targets by 2025. The National AIDS Authority would continue to track the progress in the notification implementation at the plenary meeting to be held in November 2019.
Dr. Takeshi Kasai commended the Royal Government of Cambodia for its endeavor in attaining the 90-90-90 targets in 2017. He also highly appreciated the initiative of the National AIDS Authority, which had tried to look for opportunities and prepare ways to respond sustainably to HIV/AIDS, thereby reaching the planned targets. He stressed that ensuring sustainability was most important, especially there should be unity between stakeholders in determining priorities and in ensuring the effectiveness of intervention and use of appropriate mechanisms to implement the projects and principles presented.
The head of the Asia-Pacific World Health Organization praised the leadership of the Royal Government and of the National AIDS Authority for initiating diverse activities to lead Cambodia through transition towards achieving the goal of ending the spread of AIDS, preventing it from threatening public health by 2025.
