His Excellency Senior Minister Ieng Mouly, Chair of the National AIDS Authority, presided over a ceremony to distribute more than 500,000 condoms to the capital city and provincial AIDS committees and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces High Command at the National AIDS Authority headquarters on the afternoon of 22 February 2018.
The ladies and gentlemen, the representatives of the capital city and provincial AIDS committees attended the event to receive from generous people the condoms, which constitute a valuable and efficient contribution to the prevention of HIV transmission in the Kingdom of Cambodia.
It should be mentioned that on 2 February 2018, His Excellency Pin Chhin, special adviser to the Ministry of Interior, donated 648,000 condoms, worth more than US$100,000, to the National AIDS Authority, contributing to response to HIV with the authority and the Royal Government.
This contribution will assist the Kingdom of Cambodia in procuring more resources and becoming more efficient in achieving the goal toward ceasing the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Kingdom of Cambodia in 2025.
Despite Cambodia’s success in combating AIDS and providing antiretroviral drug treatment and though a large number of people infected with HIV are able to continue to survive and normally healthy, new cases of transmission continue to exist and deaths due to the failure in the antiretroviral drug therapy still occur consecutively.
His Excellency the Senior Minister reminded that the best option is the HIV transmission prevention by way of pursuing major measures to promote the 100% condom use, because time and funds spent in the prevention of HIV transmission are more effective than treatment, as the slogan says, prevention is better than cure.
It should be recalled that in 2017, 11.6 million condoms were sold/supplied by development partner organizations, such as PSK/PSI. However, we have not received sale/supply reports from those various private companies yet. The National AIDS Authority will further cooperate with institutions concerned and the private sector to further heighten knowledge about the need and supply of condoms, which are necessary goods helping to prevent the HIV transmission.
Cambodia is among the world’s seven countries recognized by the UNAIDS for having achieved the 90-90-90 targets, which should actually be accomplished in 2020, ahead of the deadline. The seven countries include Cambodia, Singapore, Botswana, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, and the United Kingdom.
