Political Resolve and Leadership Have Enabled Cambodia To Achieve 90-90-90 Targets in Fight Against AIDS

Geneva: A meeting between Senior Minister His Excellency Ieng Mouly, Chair of the National AIDS Authority, and Michel Sidibe, director general of UNAIDS, took place at Grand Hotel Kempinski Geneva on the morning of 8 April 2019. The meeting was held while the UNAIDS organized a global consultative meeting on “Drafting Approaches Towards the Results of Sustainable AIDS Response in the Era of Sustainable Development Goal,” which lasted three days, from 8 to 10 April.

Senior Minister Ieng Mouly thanked the UNAIDS for having assisted Cambodia in combating HIV and AIDS and achieving the 90-90-90 targets (90% of HIV carriers are aware of their status, 90% of those aware of their status have received antiretroviral therapy, and 90% of those receiving the therapy have had the lowest viral load). He informed Michel Sidibe that Cambodia has been on the right path towards ending AIDS in 2025. The Royal Government of Cambodia has resolved to end AIDS and render the fight against AIDS sustainable. The Royal Government also set forth, in February 2019, a six-point principle, aiming at ensuring sustainability in the multisectoral fight against AIDS as well. Moreover, on 26 March, His Excellency the Senior Minister led an interministerial meeting to seek a common ground to ensure sustainability in the combat against AIDS in Cambodia.

In his reply, the UNAIDS director general congratulated Cambodia for having reached the 90-90-90 targets. This success has stemmed from the creation of an atmosphere that is well connected to the Royal Government of Cambodia. Moreover, Cambodia has also demonstrated transition and progress. We are proud of Cambodia’s success. The director general also commended Ms. Vladanka Andreeva, country director of UNAIDS Cambodia, who is committed to the work and has proposed preparing a video footage to show Cambodia’s success to other countries.

Afterwards, the director general presented His Excellency the Senior Minister with a certificate in recognition of the Royal Government of Cambodia’s political resolve and leadership in achieving the 90-90-90 targets on the fight against AIDS.
